Delegates and alternates are invited to arrive early if you have a strong workshop preference. Workshops will take place on Tuesday, July 12, and Thursday, July 14, 30 minutes after session adjourns.

AFSCME Financial Standards Code (PCC Room 114/Nutter Theater)
This workshop will provide an overview of the essential components of AFSCME’s Financial Standards Code. Topics to be covered include expense authorization and documentation, record-keeping and financial reporting. This workshop is highly recommended for all officers, executive board members and trustees.  

Beyond Bias: An Introduction to Implicit Bias (PCC Room 113C)
Did you know that 80 to 90% of decision-making happens at the subconscious level? This provocative and highly interactive workshop will introduce you to the groundbreaking science of implicit bias. Learn new strategies for addressing racial and other forms of bias at the individual and organizational levels.  

Bread + Butter: Why Equity Matters and Steps to Build Inclusive Local Unions (PCC Room 103 A/B)
Looking for ways to champion equity in your unions and workplaces? Don’t know where to start? Embracing diversity, equity and inclusion as “bread and butter” issues is critical to the future of the labor movement. This workshop is designed for union leaders seeking change through honest conversations and by championing issues that predominantly affect marginalized communities. Hear stories from unions that have taken bold steps in the right direction and learn how to begin your journey toward a stronger union.  

Building Power to Win Elections (PCC Room 111 A/B)
Politics is about relationships, and harnessing the power of those relationships is essentialto winning elections. By talking to everyone we know about what matters, we can ensure thatwe’re on the winning side. This session will focus on relational organizing – specifically, on using new tools (Empower (relational), BallotReady, Hustle) to have conversations with our members and our social circles to scoop up every last vote. Using a variety of different types of asks, you will learn skills to overcome political divisions and help get out the vote in 2022. 

CAP Audits and the Top 10 DOL Countdown (PCC Room 103C)
At any time, your union could be selectedfor an examination under the Department of Labor’s Compliance Audit Program (CAP.) In this session, you will learn more about the CAP, including what an examination entails, the history of the program and logistical considerations of a CAP.  You will learn the general areas that a CAP examination covers, and we will discuss a countdown of the top 10 operational issues found in a CAP. Most importantly, you will learn what you can do now to prepare yourself and your union for a compliance audit. 

Contract Campaigns: Maximizing Worker Power (PCC Room 204C)
To secure the best contract, it’s not enough to field a great bargaining team. What we do away from the bargaining table is as important as what we do at the bargaining table. This workshop is an introduction to creating contract campaigns that leverage worker power to get the best possible agreement and build a stronger union.  

Digital Communications – Using the Toolkit and Beyond (PCC Room 105 A/B)
The new AFSCME Toolkit allows field communicators and local presidents to build effective campaign-specific literature using templates. Store images, build flyers, worksite posters, testimonials, and more. For users on the go, access the toolkit from your cell phone or tablet to design materials to get out our message. Learn how to use the toolkit to strengthen your next campaign and find out how to optimize each feature of the toolkit on your computer and mobile device. Smartphone, tablet, or laptop computer required.

How to Protect Yourself against Cyberattacks (PCC Room 201A)
Cybercrime continues to evolve and new threats surface regularly. How can you maintain data integrity and increase your cybersecurity against these attacks? Vigilance, caution and taking safety precautions are all ways to protect information and keep your members and your union safe. This workshop will focus primarily on the best practices that individuals can take to maintain security, but also discuss organizational approaches.

I’m a New Officer, Now What? (PCC Room 203 A/B)
Are you a newly elected leader or officer of your local union? Do you want to clarify the roles and responsibilities of your executive board? Want to find out how to become an inclusive and representative union that reflects a diverse workforce? Are you interested in learning strategies to build a powerful local that is able to win? Join us as we prepare new leaders to grow the union and take their locals to the next level.  

Improving Contract Negotiations for Workers – Does the Federal Budget Matter? (PCC Room 204C)
The federal budget seems a little distant to many of our members. How could it possibly affect negotiations in your agency or your state? Understanding federal funds, and how they are allocated, distributed and used, can be the key to securing better contracts. This workshop will demystify new sources of funding like the American Rescue Plan, the infrastructure bill and the Build Back Better legislation, and perennial sources like Medicaid and other federal programs to help us leverage this funding to secure better agreements, hire new workers, launch new projects and improve the delivery of public services. 

Mentoring 101 (PCC Room 201B)
Many of us have been influenced by a strong mentor or we’ve been the mentor. It’s important to offer and receive guidance to support and build our leadership. In this workshop, participants will review the roles of a mentor and a mentee, reflect on their mentoring experiences, recognize the importance and benefits of a mentor and commit to recruiting and mentoring new leaders. 

New Employee Outreach: Building Power from Day One (PCC Room 113 A/B)
We know meeting new employees during their first days is critical for strengthening our union and building lasting relationships. Do you want to learn best practices for initiating conversations in both in-person and virtual situations? In this workshop, you’ll learn skills and tips that will help you reach out to those new members and sign them up.

PEOPLE – How Politics Impacts Your Life (PCC Room 110 A/B)
Our members frequently wonder why our union is involved in politics. The truth is, all levels of the government affect our daily lives, no matter if we are public or private sector workers. This workshop will help you understand how legislation and politics affect your life and the lives of members and teach you how to make effective requests for PEOPLE donations to build the program and increase our members’ political power.  

Solving Workplace Issues with Collective Action (PCC Room 201C)
How can we hold the boss accountable or build power? Through direct actions in the workplace. Many locals are getting back to the basics by mobilizing workers using workplace issue campaigns to hold the boss accountable. Using this approach, we are able to build an active membership, enhance communication, develop new leaders and quickly solve problems. 

Resolviendo Problemas Laborales a Través de la Acción Colectiva (Martes – Sala 112A/B)
¿Cómo podemos hacerle rendir cuentas al jefe o construir poder? Através de acciones directas en el lugar de trabajo. Muchas locales estánregresando a lo básico y movilizando a sus colegas a través de campañassobre problemas laborales para hacerle rendir cuentas al jefe. A travésde este enfoque podemos desarrollar una membresía activa, mejorar lacomunicación, formar nuevos líderes y resolver problemas rápidamente.

Strong Stewards – Workplace Warriors (PCC Room 108 A/B)
Strong stewards have always been the backbone of the workplace and are even more important now. We successfully faced down the Janus case, but our work continues. Stewards play a vital role in creating strong locals and active memberships. This session will help you learn the important terms and responsibilities of stewards and create a plan for mobilizing and activating members to strengthen your local.  

Telling Your Story (PCC Room 102 A/B) 
The work our members do for our communities and our stories as unionmembers are underrepresented in the media and on social media. The ability to tell our stories and express our union values is critical. Come to this workshop to develop your voice. Wewill teach you how to tell your story and then walk you through how to capture that story and ways to use it.

Organizing conversations are at the heart of everything we do – from external and internal organizing to NEOs to PEOPLE and beyond. This conversation is the key to building relationships, overcoming workplace divisions and creating stronger local unions. 

Workplace Harassment – What is It and How to Stop It (PCC Room 202 A/B)
Stopping workplace harassment and bullying are growing concerns for our members, and as leaders we are on the front lines. Finding ways to identify and interrupt hostile behavior starts with us. Learn how to identify, stop and prevent all forms of harassment in your workplace.
